Catherine Courtenaye attended high school in Tangier, Morocco. The “look” of Arabic signage was her first awakening to the abstract power of line. She then entered college in New England. While catching up to American history and culture, she became interested in the nearby Shaker community. There was a significant leap in her own artistic development while gazing at a handwritten 19th century letter. Her fascination with writing as imagery has since propelled her work forward. Her technique involves building up layers of text which then appear and disappear within the oil paint. She is not as interested in the content of the words, however these are exact facsimiles of historical artifacts. Courtenaye has been a part of numerous group and solo exhibitions both nationally and internationally in galleries and museums.
