The Telluride Gallery of Fine Art is pleased to present “Emergence,” an exhibition featuring two gallery artists: Malcolm Liepke and Shawna Moore. This exhibition is on view from Thursday, March 3, to Sunday, April 3. Please join us for drinks and small bites at the gallery for Telluride’s Art Walk evening on Thursday, March 3 from 5:00pm – 8:00pm.
Malcolm Liepke is a largely self-taught artist whose figurative oil paintings are often set in intimate interiors. Liepke paints from photographs and works in a wet-on-wet technique in which layers of oil paint are built up without drying in between. Loose brushstrokes and gray-green skin tones imbue his subjects with a fleshy sensuality, providing a voyeuristic sense of pleasure, while simple gestures and expressions convey strong emotions. Above all, Liepke’s work explores the engagement between subject and viewer.
Liepke lives and works in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His work is included in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. He has shown with the Telluride Gallery since 2007, and this presentation of ten oil paintings, all completed this year, marks the first exhibition of Liepke’s new work since 2019.
Shawna Moore uses encaustic painting to both reveal and obscure, creating mysterious surfaces and revealing depth within the use of line and color. By mixing pigment into heated beeswax and layering it onto a wooden substrate, she creates a visual record of selected memories. On view in this exhibition are eight examples from her newest body of work in which she uses wax to explore elements of light and space. “I’ve tried to distill the essence of the experience of being in the world when light and space are present,” she states.
Moore lives and works in Whitefish, Montana. She has shown with the Telluride Gallery since 2011 and has won a number of grants and awards since she first started exhibiting her work in the mid-80s. This is the first showing of her newest series in Telluride.
“Emergence” encapsulates the anticipation experienced while awaiting this first viewing of both Liepke’s and Moore’s new and exciting bodies of work. Through distinctly different methods, these artists demonstrate both playful experimentation and sophisticated refinement of what they each do so well. Seen together, these works are a duet of visual pleasure.
